Efficient batteries are vital for the smooth operations of solar electric system. Since solar energy is not available during the night, batteries act energy storage for use at such periods and during rainy days. In its common usage “battery” is an electrochemical device that converts chemical energy into electricity by a galvanic cell. Since battery is key to the solar electric system, it is very important that the right type of batteries is used to achieve the greatest efficiently. At Valentine Agency, we have researched into various types of batteries, so we use the very best for our installations. We do not recommend automotive starting batteries. We use and stock the very best deep cycle batteries suitable for solar systems. Batteries with slower charging and discharging rates are more efficient. They may cost higher but the overall benefits outweigh the cost.


The lifespan of a deep cycle battery will vary considerably with how it is used, how it is maintained and charged, temperature and other factors. We factor all these in deciding on batteries for our installations. Deep cycle batteries are designed to be discharged down as much as 80% each time. Although they can be cycled down to 20% charge, the best lifespan vs cost option is to keep the average cycle at about 50% discharge.

Battery life is related to how deep the battery is cycled each time. If a battery is discharged to 50% each day, it will last about twice as long as it is cycled to 80% DOD. If cycled only 10%, it will last about 5 times as long as one cycled 50%.

All lead acid batteries supply about 2.14 volts per cell (12.6 – 12.8 for a 12 volt battery) when fully charged. If your battery at full charged is reading 12.8 volts, at 50% DOD it should read 12.06 volts. If you can maintain your battery at this level, you should enjoy long years of usage of the battery. It is better for your battery to remain on the green zone ( 11.9- 12.42 volts). Don’t allow your inverter to show low battery and eventually shut down by itself. You can control this by determining your load requirement and hours of usage.
